Dengue Fever: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis and Prevention
Introduction
In recent years, Sudan has faced significant health challenges due to war, economic difficulties, and population displacement. These conditions have contributed to the spread of several infectious diseases, including Dengue fever, which has become a growing public health concern in many regions of the country.
What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue fever is a viral infection caused by the Dengue virus, which is transmitted mainly through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, particularly Aedes aegypti.
Unlike malaria, dengue is caused by a virus rather than a parasite. The disease is common in regions with warm climates and poor mosquito control measures.
Factors Contributing to the Spread of Dengue in Sudan
- Climate change and rising temperatures
- Population displacement and overcrowding
- Poor sanitation and water storage
- Increased mosquito breeding sites
- Lack of effective mosquito control programs
Symptoms of Dengue Fever
Symptoms usually appear 4–10 days after the mosquito bite. In many cases, symptoms are mild and disappear within a week.
- High fever (up to 40°C)
- Severe headache
- Pain behind the eyes
- Nausea and vomiting
- Muscle and joint pain
- Skin rash
- Swollen glands
Severe Dengue (Complications)
Although most cases recover within 7 days, some patients may develop severe dengue, which can be life-threatening.
Danger signs include:
- Bleeding from the nose or gums
- Blood in vomit or stool
- Severe abdominal pain
- Rapid breathing
- Pale skin and extreme thirst
- Severe weakness
Diagnosis
Dengue fever is diagnosed through laboratory tests that detect the virus or antibodies in the blood.
- Blood tests
- NS1 antigen test
- PCR testing in specialized laboratories
Treatment
There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue fever. Treatment mainly focuses on relieving symptoms and preventing complications.
- Rest and adequate hydration
- Paracetamol for fever and pain relief
- Medical monitoring for severe cases
Prevention
The best way to prevent dengue is to protect yourself from mosquito bites and reduce mosquito breeding areas.
- Use mosquito repell
